Election Reflections

As Elizabeth already said....

BARACK OBAMA AND JOE BIDEN

ARE NOW THE NEW PRESIDENT AND VP OF THE USofA!!!!!!!

Alright so now you've been told that twice...wait...more than twice, unless you live in a nut shell and have no connection to society at all.

Anyway, our last blog assignment was to post our reflections and thought on the election so here goes....

I am more unsatisfied with the turnout of the election that I am satisfied.
I think that McCain had better ideas than Obama on some very important issues that might concern Americans today. My biggest issue with Obama was that he wanted to pull the troops out of Iraq. Even though he planned on slowly pulling them out over a course of over a year, I still don't think that it was a good idea. Also, I don't think that McCain is exactly perfect in his handling of it either. McCain supported the war right from the start and I don't think that starting the war was the right thing yo do either. I think that I would have to go with McCain on this one more than I would Obama. This is Bush's mess, not McCain and I think that McCain is doing the right thing. Another important issue that both candidates were asked to share views on was the environment and energy. McCain wants to open multiply nuclear power plants and drill off shore more even though its prohibited and Obama wants to make a $150 Billion investment in a clean energy system. He actually compared it to the NASA program in the 1960's. I think that I would definitely go with Obama on this one.
Some issues I agree more with McCain than I do Obama and then there are others that I would side with Obama more than McCain.
As far as the electoral college system goes, I think that we should keep it going strong. The only part of it that I think should be changed is that I think that your individual vote should count more than it does with the electoral college. I do think however, that it is a pretty strong system and there is a reason that it has been effective for so long. It makes it easier to see who won which states faster and more effectively. I think that the "winner takes all" rule works well in most cases too. It makes it so that you can tell which candidate was liked more in the state than the other. This also kind of defeats the whole "your vote counts" thing that they all tell us. Because of the "winner takes all" rule sometimes if the other candidate from who you voted for wins the state than he/she would get all the votes in that state. That sort of defeats the whole 'you vote counts' like i said before.
On Monday, in class, we were all given a map and had to color it red and blue according to how we thought that electoral votes would play out. The only state that I guessed wrong was Indiana. I gave McCain the vote in Indiana and Obama ended up getting the voted there as well as many others in that region of the country.
Also considering the gallup polls that Elizabeth and I posted. I think that they effected my prediction about who would win the election this year a significant amount. I noticed towards the ending months before the election that Obama was more popular than McCain with most of the U.S. citizens and that only supported my predictions more.
Other things that I think about the election are that Obama has never lead anything before. McCain was elected in to the House of Representatives in 1982 and has been in the Armed Forces since he was old enough to join. McCain was was elected to the Senate in 1986. In 2004 he was re-elected Senator with 77% of the vote. He also has multiple honors from the Armed Forces and has had much more experience than Obama in the government and commitment and serving our country.

Reflection on Presidential Election

Barack Obama has won the race and is now the president- elect, with running mate Joe Biden who is vice presidential- elect.
I am not quite satisfied with the results of this years presidential election. I believe that John McCain had better ideas for our country on health care, the economy, taxes and the environment. The things that Barack Obama said he would do as president are not all logical. His tax plan will not work with the things that he plans to do with the country, he has a lot of ideas but he will most certainly have to raise taxes to fulfill all of these plans that he has. I think that it was John McCain's time to be president of the United States of America.
After seeing what went on in the election last night I still believe that we should get rid of the electoral college. It should go because if you voted for John McCain in this election in Massachusetts you may feel like your vote didn't count. If you get rid of the electoral college and make the popular vote count, then everyone will feel like their vote counted and made a difference in the U.S. government. We should have the popular vote count more than the electoral vote, let the people decide who they want their president to be.
On my prediction on Monday compared to the real results of last night's (November 4th) election I had gotten four of the states wrong. I predicted that John McCain would win New Hampshire, Indiana, Colorado and Virginia, but it turned out that Barack Obama had won all of those states. I thought for sure that McCain would win Indiana, as of 9:30 last night he had been winning that state, but in the end he had lost it. I'm not sure how though because when I checked John McCain had one almost all areas of Indiana, but Obama must have come from behind! Oh my! I was sort of close in my predictions of which presidential candidate would win each state.
My Gallup Poll research did not really influence my prediction, but it did a little bit. I did Gallup Polls on Age and Gender among Whites. I saw that on both of these Gallup Polls John McCain started pretty close if not beating Barack Obama. As time went on though Barack Obama was beating John McCain on both of these polls. It showed me that Obama had a better chance of winning, so it influenced me a little bit to give Senator Obama more states to win. Since it was only those two Gallup Polls though I gave McCain some more states than he actually won, I was wrong in that department though. My Gallup Poll research influenced me a little bit on how to predict who won what state.

McCain on Darfur Genocide

This is what Senator John McCain thinks that the U.S.ofA would do for the people of Darfur if he was to be elected as president.

John McCain wants to join a peace keeping democracy that would stop the genocide in Darfur. He wants to help to provide financial assistance and whatever other types of assistance that he can to these peace keeping societies. McCain wants to join up with that type of group, the kind of people that never want to see this happen again, the kind of people that value human rights. He thinks that we need to get other countries to help us to stop what's happening in Darfur.

McCain is almost blaming blaming China for the U.S. not helping to stop the Genocide in this video. He is saying that the Chinese people are helping the Sudanese government and are the ones that are stopping us from hitting ground in Darfur. McCain is saying that the Chinese people are the reason that we haven't helped enough yet.

He says that we will be the country that will step in and help even is the other European countries like Russia and China wont help us.

McCain want to help the people in Darfur to get back the rights that he believes are inalienable and should not have been taken away the way that they were.

Senator McCain also has no idea how he will negotiate with the Sudanese Government. He knows that they will lie, break agreements that were made, he has also helped, supported and supplied most of the Janjaweed.

He believes that America is the country to step in and lead and be the first to put our plans to action in Darfur. He believes that over time we will be the ones that end the genocide in Darfur.

Obama on Darfur Genocide

This was not an assignment for the Social Studies blog, but its something that would really impact my vote because its something that I really care about.

This is video where Obama talks about what he plans to do for the people that are victims of the genocide in Darfur.

If you don't know what that is than you can go to the website and read about it because it would take me all too long to tell you about it in this post. Its pretty much the government in darfur don't want to help them and in there most desperate time of need there government only sent people in to attack them. They were starving and needed help desperately so they rebelled against there government for not helping them and the government responded to the act by rampaging through their villages and killing and raping and torturing them relentlessly. This all started in February of 2003. The people that are causing this are known as the Janjaweed.

That might have cleared up your understanding a little bit, but that was a very vague description. I will post some links on the bottom of this post where you can learn more and help.

ANYWAYYYYYYY back to what Obama thinks.

Senator Obama wants to get people in Sudan to help the people in Darfur. He thinks that the Americans are the most powerful country in the world and we should be the people to help. He also said that the Americans need to keep there word, that we cant say that we will help and then not. Also, Obama says that all of the genocides are "a stain on all of us". He says it in a way that could imply that he feels bad, but he doesn't really plan on doing anything. He says it like it's sad, but he cant do anything. He wants top put a protective force in Darfur and thinks that we need to get in there and stop this. Obama claims to be very knowledgeable about the topics and also passionate. He knows about the commitment that this will take and he is ready to take it on.

Obama doesn't really specify what exactly he plans to in Darfur, only that he will help and that he feels bad about it. Obama could have been a little bit more specific instead of just saying that he is glad that people are involved in it and that we want to help. I think that Obama could really make a difference in Darfur if he stuck to what he said about commitment in what the Americans do.

Obama TV Ad 2

This is another Obama ad that I have posted.

This one is about Obama telling about how everything that McCain does is a lie. It points out specifically that McCain voted with Bush 90% of the time that Bush was in Office and how McCain is deceiving you when you are listening to what he is saying.

This is an advertisement where Obama is being negative tows McCain's campaign. He doesn't say anything in the ad about what he plans to do for our country, it only says what McCain wont do.

This advertisement doesn't really go over any important details in the campaign. The only information that the ad gives is that McCain shouldn't be president and he votes with Bush too much and that Obama should win.

It doesn't give out out any information about Obama or McCain. The ad is very shallow as far as information about important issues. The only thing that It really covers is that McCain is a deceptive person and is pretty much George Bush the second.

I so think that the advertisement is mostly true though. The information saying that McCain is voting with Bush and that he is probably deceptive is true. Obama is saying that McCain is not any where near good enough to be president though and that might not be true because he was nominated to run so he dos have a chance.

I don't think that this ad would change my vote. I think that if you were a republican it would have more of an effect on your vote than if you were a democrat. Although if you were a democrat then it might effect your vote a little bit the way that Obama is attacking McCain all throughout the ad but still doesn't say anything about what he plans to do about the issues that he claims McCain has no good ideas about.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Review of Republican John McCain's Website

John McCain's Website Review!!!!!!!!

http://www.johnmccain.com/splash32615.htm

This is my second website review. Last time I did a review on Obama's website and because I'm not going to review the same website twice.....well you probably guessed it, I'm reviewing McCain's website now.

The first thing you see when you get to the homepage of McCain's website is a video with him talking about how the last few years in our country have not been the best and what he wants to do with our country.

He also has links so that you can join his campaign and you can also click on a link that would say why you should vote for McCain.

There are also links to key topics that would interest people the most, like heath care, job plans and taxes.

All of this is on the home page. After this page you can click on a link that will take you to the main site.

Once you get to the main page you can see that McCain has links to UPCOMING EVENTS, NEWS, and other things that might interest a person. He also has ways that you can donate to the campaign and there are also ways that you can watch "Joe the Plumber" and volunteer to help support him.

On the top of the screen it has McCain's motto.

COUNTRY FIRST
REFORM*PROSPERITY*PEACE
This is McCain's way of saying that he will put his country first and doing everything that he can for it.
Overall McCain's website is very easy to navigate and has helpful information that someone that might be voting for him would like to know.
He target both older people and younger people with his website. He has things about issues that the tax payer would like to know as well as "Joe the Plumber' for the younger audience. McCain's website is very nicely laid out so that all people will be interested in it.

Obama T.V. Ad

This is a t.v. ad for Senator Barack Obama.

It is a very informational ad and tells you a lot of great things about Barack Obama. It tells you how Barack Obama went to law school and after wanted to make change, and he did. A tactic that he used was that the ad would say something about Barack Obama and then there would be someone talking about how it was true and what a good guy Senator Obama is.

This advertisement show how Barack Obama cut taxes and improved health care in Illinois. It also shows how he has helped issues like gun control and Ethics Reform. At the end there is a scene of Barack Obama at a rally saying how this is not a Liberal or Conservative America, its the United States Of America.

This advertisement makes me feel pretty confident in Barack Obama by what he has done already fro America, but it does not tell what he will do as president. It still shows many things that he possibly could do as president of the United States America. It is a well developed t.v. advertisement.

Review of Barack Obama's website

http://www.barackobama.com/index.php

Barack Obama's website is very good and easy to navigate through. When you first get on to it you are at the home screen. There is a big screen that has many ads on it telling about Senator Obama's plans for taxes, health care, ect.

At the bottom of the website there are pictures of Obama "gear" that you can buy. It varies from bumper stickers to hats to t-shirts. There is also a list of events that are coming up or have already happened, from rallies with Joe Biden to rallies with himself alone.

At the top of the page there is a toolbar with many items to click on. Learn, Issues, Media, Action, People, States, Blog and Store, are all items that you can click on! If you move your mouse over these topics a bar drops down and you have a variety of things to click on.

Barack Obama's website is a great place to go to get great information on Barack Obama and Joe Biden and their plans for the future of America.

Overall Results on a Gallup Poll

http://www.gallup.com/poll/election2008.aspx

The poll that I am telling you about is at the bottom of the page when you clik on the link because the thing wouldn't let me upload the image this time.

This is the second Gallup Poll that I have posted so far.

This one is about who voted for which candidate between independent voters.

As you can see, back in the beginning of April independent voters were leaning more towards McCain than they were to Obama.

In the middle of April McCain took a spike for the worst. The independent voters started to vote more towards the democratic side than the republican.

For about the whole month of May McCain stayed on top of Obama.

From the middle of May to the beginning of June, McCain stayed strong ahead Obama. This is because the Republican National Convention was around this time and he became more popular than Obama during this time.

Once the Republican National Convention ended, Obama found himself on top of McCain in the running for the White House.

He stayed on top until about the end of July when McCain suddenly took a small spike in popularity.

For about the whole month of July, during the Democratic National Convention, Obama stayed over 5% more popular with the independents than McCain did.

For the next month it stayed a very tight race with Obama always slightly on top of McCain.

In the beginning and middle of September McCain had a spike in popularity. He was at least 7% more popular than Obama for a whole month. As October got closer Obama was once again ahead in the race.

As time went on Obama got increasingly more popular than McCain and by the end of October Obama now has a 7% lead on McCain with the independent voters.

In case you didn't know..........Independent voters are people who consider themselves neither a democrat nor a republican.

Gallup Poll supported by Gender among whites

http://www.gallup.com/poll/108031/Candidate-Support-Gender-Among-Whites.aspx (I'm sorry the image would not upload so I can only get the link.)

This is a Gallup Poll supported by Gender Among Whites. As you can see if you look at it (by following the link) the men have always supported John McCain more than Barack Obama, as time went on however, the men started to support Barack Obama more and more. John McCain is still leading in the men's eyes.

As for the women they had liked Barack Obama better from the beginning, but around late July it was tied between the two candidates. In early August the women liked John McCain more than Barack Obama. As time progressed they still supported John McCain more, but more recently (around early October) the women's support for John McCain and Barack Obama were tied again! Now they support Barack Obama 1% more than John McCain.

It is a very up and down vote for the two candidates between the white men and women.

2nd political cartoon!

This here is a political cartoon about Barack Obama. It shows Oprah Winfrey trying to help him with his campaign. Everyone is cheering and they are saying that she has them convinced to vote... for her! She's trying to get people to vote for Barack Obama, but the people are so influenced by her that they want to vote for her instead of Senator Obama! This is a funny political cartoon!

Elizabeth :)

Website Review for John McCain

http://www.johnmccain.com/splash32615.htm <-- that is a link to John McCain's website which I will be reviewing.

Senator McCain's site is good and easy to navigate through. When you first go onto the website a video of John McCain comes up and it's him saying how he will make the next four years work for this country. He tells us how he will cut taxes, drill in the U.S.A. for energy, and try to find a way to have renewable energy in the U.S. so we don't have to keep paying all of these other countries
.

Country First:
Reform* Prosperity* Peace

(That is what it says at the top of John McCain's official website.)

Then you have to click on, go to John McCain's website and wuaalaaa! you're there. There is a big video screen that plays videos about Senator McCain's plans for the country, it also has reasons on why to vote for John McCain. There are weekly pictures of John McCain and Sarah Palin and also a toolbar up at the top where you can see John McCain's views on all of the issues of the country, things about John McCain, events, news and media and more. It is an easy website to navigate through and I think that it's great!

Obama WEBSITE REVIEW

Our assignment was to pick one of the candidates websites and review it on our election blogs. I chose Senator Obama's website.

Senator Obama's website is http://www.barackobama.com.

His website is easy to navigate and has a lot of detailed information and links to click on. The first thing you see when you came on the website was Obama's plan to cut taxes and how it could effect you. A lot of people are really concerned about their taxes and this was a good idea as an advertisement for the home Page on the site. On the homepage of the site there are all of the links that lead to things you might want to know about the person that could possible be the next president of the United States.

"I'm asking you to believe.
Not just my ability to bring about
real change in Washington...I'm
asking you to believe in yours."

- Barack Obama

This is a quote that I pulled directly from the front page of Obama's website,. It is right on the top of the screen where it says Obama and Biden. Obama thought that this was something that he wanted everyone to see on his website so he put it right on the top.
Obama's website has many links that lead to information about different issues that may concern you like the war, taxes, economy, heath care, etc...He has what caused the issue and what is happening and what he plans to do about them. He also has different links on how to donate money to to the Obama campaign, volunteer and knock on doors to support the Obama plan for America.
He also has ads, stories and blogs and events. Obama even has a link that Hilary supporters can click on!
and then on top of that he has his own line of 'Obama Biden" t-shirts and advertising goodies!

2nd POLITICAL CARTOON

POLITICAL CARTOON 2!!

This cartoon is Senator McCain and Senator Obama in Cartoony Tortoise and hare form!!!!!

Obama is making fun of McCain because he is old and slow and LOSING the election.

So McCain is all like "Remember the end of this story?" because at the end of the story by Aesop, the Mr. John McCain Tortoise ends up wining the race.

So this cartoon is funny because Obama is like winning and and already counting McCain out of the race and McCain is reminding him that in the fable, the tortoise won in the end because the hare was cocky enough to take a nap in the middle of the race and ended up waking up too later and loosing the race.

haha

Senator Obama Commercial

This advertisement is about Senator Obama and his views on our now crashing economy.

John McCain commercial

This is a commercial for Senator John McCain's campaign for president.

It is showing us Senator McCain at a rally telling us to keep our faith and courage because we are Americans. It shows us how John McCain will bring Middle-class tax relief, by showing him talking with the words popping out so we can see them. The commercial also shows a picture of John McCain standing near a desk and there is a headline up above telling us how he will be ready from day one. It is supposed to make you feel confident about how he will always be ready to run the country from beginning until the end. The commercial also tells us that we should have a real hero for president, Senator McCain was in a war and he was also a Prisoner of War, but he fought through until the end and he made it out alive. This commercial is trying to show us what John McCain can do for the Country.

Gallup Poll by Age

This is a Gallup Poll voted under the category of age. If you click on it I think that it will get bigger. If you look at it you can see that people 65 and older had supported John McCain until around the end of September. So as you can see more people would vote Obama over McCain at the moment, so if McCain wants to win he better step it up!
Elizabeth :)

Gallup Poll

Greetings and Hello

This is a GALLUP POLL.

It's a pole that says which
candidate is winning in a certain group of people over time.

This pole says which candidate, Senator McCain or Senator Obama, is winning with the people of different ages.

Over time this pole shows how many people supported which candidate and how old they were.

As you can see, back in August the younger people were favoring Obama over McCain and the Older people were leaning more towards Senator McCain.

Over time, the younger people have stayed following Senator Obama while the older folks out there slowing drifted their alliance to Senator Obama.

Towards the end of August the older people started following Obama by 1% more than McCain. They didn't permanently start to follow Obama until mid to late September though. The younger folks still had about 55-60% of the people voting with Obama.

By mid October (now) the majority of all the people in America are voting with Senator Obama.

Senator McCain definitely has some work to do if he plans to win!!!

Political Cartoon! ;)

This is a cartoon about the presidential campaign. It shows Barack Obama on the phone talking about how John McCain supports George Bush's idea on wiretapping.

Then you see the comment, "No I don't" coming out of the phone. It is implied that John McCain is the one saying that through the phone.

It's funny because John McCain would have to wiretap the phone to say that he didn't support wiretapping!

McCain and Obama on the Economy

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
The economy in the U.S. is in recession right now. We are in the largest budget deficit in the United States's History. People are losing their jobs and homes and everything that they had before. People are also coming up short on money in the way of huuuuuge debts.

SENATOR McCAIN WILL:
McCain says that people's jobs are the most important part of our economy. Jobs are what keeps the economy running. He believes that cutting the taxes on small businesses and corporations will allow them to keep working and running. This, McCain says is just as important as cutting the taxes on your average American citizen. McCain wants to make the two tax cut that Bush made permanent cuts for the U.S. people. He also plans to cut down on all the money that the government is spending because he thinks that they often waste the money.

SENATOR OBAMA WILL:
Senator Obama wants to roll back the tax cuts on the wealthiest Americans in the country. He will , depending on the state of the economy, raising the taxes on those people and also on large corporations. Of of this tax raise he will make more than $250,000. Most of the other people in the U.S. will have less taxes to pay. Obama plans to create more jobs for the people that need them. He will be adding more jobs for people that can help to build new highways and work in the school transportation, as well as public transportation.

~Meghan

Senator Obama and Senator McCain's views on The Environment and Energy

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Right now, oil is a huge issue. Most of Americans get their energy from oil. Oil is becoming a more and more scarce resource to use. It is all causing a lot of pollution. Carbon emissions from the oil are the main causes of climate change. Oil is only getting more expensive and the U.S. gets its oil from other countries that aren't necessarily that nice. How can the United States slowly back away from using oil as much as it does and solve the problems that it has proposed to us?

WHAT SENATOR McCAIN THINKS:
Senator John McCain thinks that we should rely on nuclear power more. He plans on including 45 new nuclear power plants. He is encouraging people to create new biofuels. He is promising the person that makes the first long lasting battery powered car 300 million dollars. He also wants to keep drilling -- illegally -- of the shore for oil. He plans on doing it immediately.

biofuel is fuel that is produced from renewable biological resources. Things like ethanol. Ethanol is made up of plant materials.

WHAT BARACK OBAMA THINKS:
Senator Obama disagrees with McCain's ideas. He doesn't think that we can get out of this as easily as McCain does. McCain wanted to simply drill into the ocean and get oil. Obama doesn't think that it is that simple. Obama argued with McCain that his idea would not produce any oil for the next seven years years. Obama will start to consider the thought of minimal offshore drilling and is now proposing that the Americans invest in a 150 billion dollar project that would end in a huge wind power plant and other "clean energy" plants. Senator Obama compared the the size of the 1960's space program to the size of his goal for the Untied States in the future.

Barack Obama and John McCain On Taxes

Barack Obama's view on Taxes:

Senator Obama has great ideas about our countries taxes. He will not increase taxes for families with an income of fewer than 250,000 dollars a year. Any Families that make 250,000 dollars or more will pay the same amount of taxes or less than they were paying before. He wants to give middle-class families and small businesses tax relief. He says that his plan for tax relief will help restore the economic growth in America. He wants to help all low-income families so that they don’t have to pay horrible taxes, and then they can live good lives. Obama wants to make it so that Americans can do their taxes in a quick amount of time without an accountant. Barack Obama has great plans for our taxes.

John McCain's view on taxes:

John McCain has high hopes for what to do about taxes. He wants to make sure that no tax rates rise because that is bad to do with the economy that we are in right now. He wants to cut taxes for families in the Middle-Class and keep taxes simple and fair. Senator McCain believes that with the economic crisis that we are struggling with right now we should not make taxes higher because that would be about the worst possible thing to do. John McCain says that we need taxes that are simpler and more fair. He wants to make it much harder to increase tax rates. John McCain wants to help people with lowering taxes.

Senator McCain and Senator Obama's Views on the WAR IN IRAQ

What YOU Need To Know about the WAR IN IRAQ:

Since the American troops have been in Iraq, the Iraqi government has been completely relying on the Americans to take care of them and protect them. It is true that since the Americans have been in Iraq that the death toll has dramatically decreased. It is also true that over 1,000 American soldiers have died and over 620,000 have been out on multiple deployments. The soldiers and their families have sacrificed so much for the Iraqi civilians. Also, the American’s military equipment and weapons have now worn out nine times as fast as they were before. This is all because President Bush failed to hold the Iraqi government accountable for their own country.

What Democratic Senator Obama plans to do:
Senator Obama has been against the war since it started. The war has only distracted the country from fighting the terrorists in Afghanistan where we have troops also based.

Obama has planned to remove the troops in Iraq within the next sixteen months. He will leave small groups of people in both Iraq and Afghanistan to keep up the counter-terrorism operations that are currently running. Obama thinks that doing this will be better for the U.S.’s national security and will, in the long run, make us safer.

What Republican Senator McCain plans to do:
Unlike Senator Obama, Senator McCain strongly supports the war in Iraq. He encouraged the surge in Iraq. All at the same time he has disagreed with President Bush about his handling of the conflict.

McCain believes that it is too soon to withdraw the troops because the Iraqi government is not yet ready to handle the necessary security that the country needs. He thinks that taking the troops out would cause international chaos and fighting. Quoting John McCain, “It would be… a strain on our character as a great nation, if we were to walk away from the Iraqi people.”

What do you think about the war in Iraq????

Barack Obama and John McCains Veiws On Health Care

John McCain On Health care:

Senator McCain says that since health care costs have been rising so rapidly, he wants to make sure that the prices stay at a steady, affordable cost. John McCain's plan for health care is to try to not have employee-based health care. He would give tax credits to families to buy health care from an insurance company that they want. He believes that if people can buy insurance across states then it would make the health care cost less. Senator McCain wants health care to stay the same for people as they move in and out of jobs.

Barack Obama On Health care:

Barack Obama wants people with employee-based health care to keep it, and he wants small business owners to get help to provide coverage by receiving tax benefits.
