WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:
Right now, oil is a huge issue. Most of Americans get their energy from oil. Oil is becoming a more and more scarce resource to use. It is all causing a lot of pollution. Carbon emissions from the oil are the main causes of climate change. Oil is only getting more expensive and the U.S. gets its oil from other countries that aren't necessarily that nice. How can the United States slowly back away from using oil as much as it does and solve the problems that it has proposed to us?
WHAT SENATOR McCAIN THINKS:
Senator John McCain thinks that we should rely on nuclear power more. He plans on including 45 new nuclear power plants. He is encouraging people to create new biofuels. He is promising the person that makes the first long lasting battery powered car 300 million dollars. He also wants to keep drilling -- illegally -- of the shore for oil. He plans on doing it immediately.
biofuel is fuel that is produced from renewable biological resources. Things like ethanol. Ethanol is made up of plant materials.
WHAT BARACK OBAMA THINKS:
Senator Obama disagrees with McCain's ideas. He doesn't think that we can get out of this as easily as McCain does. McCain wanted to simply drill into the ocean and get oil. Obama doesn't think that it is that simple. Obama argued with McCain that his idea would not produce any oil for the next seven years years. Obama will start to consider the thought of minimal offshore drilling and is now proposing that the Americans invest in a 150 billion dollar project that would end in a huge wind power plant and other "clean energy" plants. Senator Obama compared the the size of the 1960's space program to the size of his goal for the Untied States in the future.
