What YOU Need To Know about the WAR IN IRAQ:
Since the American troops have been in Iraq, the Iraqi government has been completely relying on the Americans to take care of them and protect them. It is true that since the Americans have been in Iraq that the death toll has dramatically decreased. It is also true that over 1,000 American soldiers have died and over 620,000 have been out on multiple deployments. The soldiers and their families have sacrificed so much for the Iraqi civilians. Also, the American’s military equipment and weapons have now worn out nine times as fast as they were before. This is all because President Bush failed to hold the Iraqi government accountable for their own country.
What Democratic Senator Obama plans to do:
Senator Obama has been against the war since it started. The war has only distracted the country from fighting the terrorists in Afghanistan where we have troops also based.
Obama has planned to remove the troops in Iraq within the next sixteen months. He will leave small groups of people in both Iraq and Afghanistan to keep up the counter-terrorism operations that are currently running. Obama thinks that doing this will be better for the U.S.’s national security and will, in the long run, make us safer.
What Republican Senator McCain plans to do:
Unlike Senator Obama, Senator McCain strongly supports the war in Iraq. He encouraged the surge in Iraq. All at the same time he has disagreed with President Bush about his handling of the conflict.
McCain believes that it is too soon to withdraw the troops because the Iraqi government is not yet ready to handle the necessary security that the country needs. He thinks that taking the troops out would cause international chaos and fighting. Quoting John McCain, “It would be… a strain on our character as a great nation, if we were to walk away from the Iraqi people.”
What do you think about the war in Iraq????
